LifeCell's Technology

LifeCell's patented human tissue matrix, Alloderm®, has been successfully used in over 1 million grafts and implants to date, and a growing body of clinical evidence points to its potential use in a host of other surgical applications.
LifeCell’s patented tissue matrix was originally developed in 1994 as a graft for burn patients. Since that time, AlloDerm®’s remarkable versatility has led to its use in a host of other reconstructive applications. From gingival grafting to abdominal wall reconstruction, AlloDerm allows surgeons to restore many types of tissue damaged through injury or disease—using the regenerative power of their patients’ own skin.

The story of AlloDerm combines high-tech medical innovation with the essential elements of human biology. It begins with donors and their families, whose generous gifts are recovered by our partners at tissue and organ banks across the nation. This donated tissue then undergoes a multi-step process in which the cellular components that can lead to tissue rejection and graft failure are removed. Critical biochemical and structural components are retained, creating an excellent framework for organizing the same tissue regeneration process that the body naturally and continually undergoes to repair damaged or inadequate integumental tissue. Because the components remain in their natural state, AlloDerm is immediately recognized as a human tissue, which supports rapid revascularization, remodeling and transitioning into host tissue. The outcome is tissue that grows and ages normally.

To date, AlloDerm has been used in more than 1 million grafts and implants—and an increasing number of surgeons continue to discover its extraordinary regenerative qualities every day. From augmenting rotator cuff repair, to eliminating the need for autologous skin grafts in burn patients, to safely replacing infected synthetic mesh in the abdominal wall, AlloDerm’s efficacy in a variety of surgical applications is supported by an expanding body of clinical evidence.

More than a decade of successful use has proven AlloDerm’s exceptional versatility, with new applications yet to be discovered. Today, our patented tissue matrix technology remains “first in class”—making LifeCell the leader in tissue regeneration.
